Join us for a walk through the unspoiled countryside in Slovenia.
Slovenia is a beautiful country, with gentle people, unspoiled natural beauty, a diversity of landscapes, and wonderful food. And while Slovenia boasts tall, alpine peaks for hiking, it is also a lovely area for 6-10 mile walks around lakes, through farm fields, and up gentle river valleys that lead to breath-taking waterfalls.
Slovenia borders Austria on the north and Italy to the west and combines the cultures and cuisines of its neighbors. And of course, Slovenia contributes its own language, history, and foods. It’s a most inviting country.
During this tour, we will stay in a central hotel for our entire trip, an easy walk from Lake Bohinj. From this HQ, we’ll undertake a series of picturesque day walks in the area as we take in a diverse and memorable corner of the country, just on the south side of Slovenia’s Triglav National Park.
Slovenia is a small, yet remarkably diverse country nestled in the heart of Central Europe. It is a land of stunning geographical contrasts, where the Alps meet the Mediterranean. This unique location has shaped its landscape and culture, offering visitors a wide array of natural beauty, from the snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps and the enchanting emerald-green rivers and lakes to its small but beautiful Adriatic coastline. More than half of the country is covered by forests, making it one of the greenest nations in the world and a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, skiing, and other active pursuits.
The nation's rich cultural heritage is deeply intertwined with its historical position as a meeting point of diverse influences. For centuries, Slovenian lands were shaped by Celtic, Roman, and later, Germanic and Slavic traditions, eventually becoming part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and then Yugoslavia.
A strong sense of national identity, however, has always persisted, particularly through the preservation of the Slovene language and a deep appreciation for its arts and traditions. This cultural resilience culminated in Slovenia's peaceful declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, leading to a successful transition to a stable democracy.
Today, Slovenia is a thriving, modern European nation. It joined the European in 2004 and later adopted the euro. The country is increasingly recognized for its commitment to sustainability, its stunning natural landscapes, and its high quality of life. The capital, Ljubljana, has been honored as a "Green Capital of Europe." Beyond its natural allure and eco-conscious initiatives, Slovenia is also gaining recognition for its burgeoning wine industry and its local cuisine.
Our base for our time in Slovenia is the Art Hotel Kristal, located a short walk from Lake Bohinj. In addition to comfortable rooms with balconies, this modern hotel offers a restaurant, bar, and a wellness center with sauna and jacuzzi.
The hotel’s restaurant is known for its cuisine and use of local ingredients. The menu changes each evening.
The hotel promises a great meal and a comfortable bed so we can wake up and enjoy our next day’s walk. And in case you want more, you can even schedule a massage in the hotel’s wellness center.
